STEM: Providing Real-World, Project-Based Learning Experiences

The NVCA STEM program provides authentic project-based lessons for K-12. Our engaging real-world content empowers students to develop the essential 21st century skills necessary to be successful in college, career, and life.

Our STEM curriculum is based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines-science, technology, engineering and mathematics-in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. STEM integrates these disciplines into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning environment that demonstrates how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It teaches students computational thinking focused on real world applications of problem solving.

Our STEM program requires cross-discipline training in all other subject matter. Our teachers are challenged to have lessons that are engaging and relevant, cross-curricular, focused on 21st century skills, differentiate learning, and incorporating reading and writing which provides for an authentic assessment of their students understanding.

Students work on projects that engages them in solving real-world problems or answering complex questions. In doing so, students demonstrate their knowledge and skills by developing a product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinkingcreativity, and communication skills in the context of doing an authentic, meaningful project. By working with team members in groups, teamwork and interpersonal communication skills are developed and strengthened.

Utilization of Technology to Give More Students a Voice and Choice

Technology is woven into every grade and subject to help students work collaboratively, serve as leaders, and build critical thinking skills. NVCA’s robust platform of technology provides for Integrating data and technology into instruction thereby allowing teachers to create a rich learning environment. Technology is woven into every grade and subject to help students work collaboratively, serve as leaders, and build critical thinking skills. It provides our students with greater access to rich content and allows them to integrate that into problem-solving solutions.

With a state-of-the arts media lab, our students experience a wide range of lessons using technology that include:

  • Graphic Design
  • Robotics
  • 3D Printer Technology
  • Coding
  • Personalized and adaptive programs for math, reading, vocabulary and spelling
  • Music Composition
  • Video Production
