Dear NVCA families,
We hope your summer is blessed and relaxed. As we gear up for the start of a new school year, and for the sake of clarification, we would like to review laptop requirements for 6th through 10th grade students.
After reviewing the laptop requirements forwarded you earlier this month, please consider those specifications a recommendation rather than a requirement.
We simply want you to be able to make a purchase that is well informed. Specifically, we are focusing on specifications that ensure long-term use and ideal performance.
In order of value for your dollar:
- Solid State Drive - Laptops are in constant motion. The solid state drive means no moving parts to break when jostled or dropped.
- Intel i5 processor (or better) - Processing speeds below this level means your student will be waiting longer for information to load. Speed is important when you consider each class period is 45 minutes. This item also influences video and photo editing programs.
- 8GB of SDRAM - This item is what allows multiple programs to run smoothly and simultaneously.
- Dedicated graphic card (2GB) - This is the one item that is truly optional. Dedicated graphic cards are useful for Photoshop, video editing and 3D design. These are programs we will be working on throughout the year.
Attached keyboard, Antivirus Software and carrying case are standard requirements.
Your computer purchase is your decision.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, ideas or suggestions.
We are fortunate to have collaborated with NVCA parent Jason Lehman in regard to the following laptop recommendations.
We really appreciate your patience as we move into using better technology as a school. We know how important it is stay in step with our culture as it pertains to things like technology, however we also understand there are risks in using things like video, apps and the internet. As a school we will be using web services that are designed to restrict access to content that could be harmful. In the coming week, we will be providing a list of these tools and services so that you can incorporate the same level of security and safeguard in your own home. We are available to answer any questions as we are moving forward in the process.
